Heirloom. This long-time favorite is a different species (z. haageana) and is prized for its striking multi-colored double blooms and its extra disease resistance in the garden. Awarded an All-American Selections medal way back in 1962, it still can't be beat for the sheer volume of bright blooms. 2 1/2 inches across, they are deep mahogany red with contrasting yellow and gold tips. Plant the 12-18 inch plants in the front of the bed and cut stems all summer long.
